Barbie and her friends have been inspiring children and adults for years now. Starting with the doll itself and ending with countless movies, the Mattel creation has birthed another trending wave – Barbiecore.
Barbiecore Inspires Creativity
Some might find it surprising that Barbiecore is, mostly, a home décor trend. Yet, after the world discovered cottagecore, carnivalcore, cluttercore, and other odd ways to address interior style, Barbie and her aesthetic had to find their way into our homes. Among other trends floating around the internet, Barbiecore is the craziest and loudest of them all. Of course, it appears in clothing styles, too. Inspired by Margo Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s appearance in the upcoming live-action Barbie movie, girls on Instagram and TikTok are showing off their bright outfits. The new Jimmy Choo café in hot pink colors, though, once again proves that the ‘90s glam interior style is swiping designers off their feet.
But, what is Barbiecore? Just like Barbie, it shows off all shades of pink. Sometimes, the interior can include other colors like magenta, bright orange, or even pastels. “It’s fair to say this trend is not for the faint hearted,” said Tash Bradley, Lick’s Head of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist. “’It’s a bold and nostalgic trend where you’ve got to be ready to stand out.” But don’t be scared of the loudness! Instead, dive into the color and shade exploration that Barbiecore brings along. “’A much-welcomed mood-booster after the last few years, ‘Barbiecore’ is all about embracing vibrant hues in everyday life,” said Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson. “The ‘Barbiecore’ trend is a great opportunity to experiment with playful motifs too – like hearts, daisies, and squiggles – to bring a touch of childhood nostalgia to your home.”
How To Experiment With Barbie Pinks
So, how does one introduce Barbiecore into their life? The easiest and fastest way is to add a lot of pink to the interior. Despite inspiration boards showing a lot of pink walls, there’s no need to paint yours. Not everyone can adapt to hot pink to that extent! Instead, try out dusty or pastel shades of pink. Apart from painting, try shopping for bed linens and towels in a bright shade. Moreover, add some frills, florals, and romantic prints to the interior. “Scalloped and frill-edged bed linens are very popular at the moment and they’re a subtle way to bring a touch of femininity into the room,” said Secret Linen Store co-founder Molly Freshwater. “Alternatively, floral cushions or tablecloths are budget-friendly ways to update your living room or kitchen with these soft vibes.”
Vintage is another wave complimenting Barbiecore. Wall décor like postcards, prints, photos, tassels, vintage books, bright pink landline phones – all those ingredients mix into the new trend. “Keeping these subtle means that they don’t take over the room and just give the space a pop of fun,” explained Freshwater. Don’t forget to make the bedroom and guest room cozy with fluffy duvets and big couch pillows. “Although perhaps not ideal for the summer months, a top tip would be to double up on the duvets, so your bed looks perfectly cloud-like,” she added.
“Using several pillows and cushions is also a great way to plump up your cozy bed or sofa, and they are an easy way to play with fun textures like faux fur or sheepskin in whites or pastels.”
