Presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes’s annual meeting, the new research proved that drinking one of three types of tea for health reasons can reduce the risk for Type 2 diabetes.
Tea For Health: Try Those Three
The last research on tea for health consists of 19 previous studies – and all of them state that you need to drink tea for reduced Type 2 diabetes risk. Black, green, or Oolong tea can help to reduce the risk of developing the disease by 17% in a decade. The research by a Chinese team looked into more than one million adults from eight countries who drank four cups of tea every day. Yet, you have to drink only one to three cups daily to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes by 4%! Each bonus cup brings an additional 1%. “Our results are exciting because they suggest that people can do something as simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to potentially lessen their risk of developing type 2 diabetes,” Xiaying Li, a researcher at Wuhan University of Science and Technology, said in a statement.
In addition to diabetes, drinking tea for health can help prevent heart disease and stroke, and lower the risk of mortality overall. Conducted by the National Cancer Institute, a month-old study said that black tea lowered the risk of death by 9% to 13% among people in the UK over 14 years. “We think our findings will be very reassuring to people who are already drinking tea,” said Dr. Maki Inoue-Choi, a staff scientist from the Institute.
Are There Negative Sides To Drinking Tea?
So, we’ve already established that drinking tea for health is an extremely advantageous endeavor. If four cups a day is a perfect amount, is there a line you shouldn’t cross? Inoue-Choi said that her study also included individuals who drank more than 10 cups of black tea a day. Interestingly enough, the team “didn’t see any negative effects on mortality risk,” she said. You’re also free to add milk or sugar to the tea – it doesn’t reduce the positive effect. “We should still follow the dietary guidelines to avoid too much sugar and too much saturated fat,” she added. Otherwise, the brewed drink still has polyphenols, the compounds that provide our bodies with antioxidants. Most of the time, they are found to reduce inflammation.
“These compounds may decrease inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, and in turn that possibly lowers the risk of developing certain health conditions such as heart disease,” Inoue-Choi said. When talking about cancer prevention, tea might not appear as an active ingredient. Instead, it depends on the type of cancer and additional research. At one point, three or more cups of black tea a day were found to worsen the risk for breast cancer. Very hot tea, as well as other beverages, is associated with esophageal cancer. “Findings for cancer have been more mixed,” Inoue-Choi said. “There have been more consistent results for heart disease or stroke.”
“We wouldn’t recommend people change their tea intake solely based on this single study.”
