Who would have thought that Subway would house a modern-day fairytale? Over two decades ago, while both were working at a Subway in Utah, Jordan and Jennifers Olsen fell in love. Now, 22 years later, they’ve decided to purchase the location from the previous owners! Lovers of Subway themselves, they are keeping the shop open and delivering customers with the classic subs they love.
A Couple Of Subway Employees
22 years ago, while 17-years-old, Jordan Olsen began working at his local Subway restaurant in Utah. Of course, when he started, he had no idea that he would soon discover the love of his life – in addition to earning a paycheck. Even now, Jordan can remember falling in love with Jennifer, his future wife, the first time he saw her. He says it was when he came in for his first shift on the job. “This sounds cheesy, but I peeked my head around the corner, saw the new girl making somebody a sandwich, and I was done for,” Jordan recalled. “She was drop-dead gorgeous.”
After a couple of months of courting, the two went on their first date. The rest, as they say, is history! The couple married just four years later in 2001. Now, they’ve found the perfect way to commemorate their love to each other: buying and operating the Subway where they first met!
An Incredible Solution
Through the grapevine, the Olsens heard that the owners of the Subway, their previous bosses, were about to retire and sell the franchise. When they heard that, the couple knew they needed to try and buy it. So, after a short talk with the owners and a trip to the bank, the two of them purchased the Subway! “I told Jennifer, ‘You can be the manager and I’ll show up to help whenever you need me,” said Jordan. And Jennifer loved the idea!
Now, the Olsens are not running the Subway alone. In fact, they have three daughters, Ayla, 13, Lily, 11, and Hadley, 8, helping them as well. Meanwhile, the girls grow up and become more independent, Jennifer figures she’ll have more and more time to run the shop. It works perfectly! Jordan admits that the idea sounds more than a little crazy. “But to us, it made perfect sense. We’ve always been really fond of that Subway where we met. And the sandwiches aren’t bad, either,” he said.”
“I’m The Luckiest Guy Ever”
The couple completed the purchased of the Subway in late 2019, officially opening under their hands in early 2020. Now, they have twenty employees and know their customers well. “We have regulars who have been coming here for years, and they’re all happy for us. This place is kind of like a ‘mom and pop’ Subway, so it’s been fun to get to know a lot of the customers and learn about their lives,” Jennifer said. While coronavirus has hit them hard, just like everyone else, they continue to preserve.
Meanwhile, two still make each other’s favorite sandwiches: for Jordan, a turkey, ham, and bacon melt with Swiss and extra vinegar. For Jennifer, roast beef and provolone on Italian with the works. Even though it’s been 22 years, Mrs. Olsen said, “I still steal a look at Jennifer and tell her that I’m smitten. Honestly, I feel like I’m the luckiest guy ever.”
