No questions asked, nature is always finding ways to surprise humans, no matter how much we work to understand it. From blooming sunsets to incredible acts of destruction, nature can take our breath away. However, sometimes it makes us smile in smaller ways, like when this woman found a hummingbird-shaped icicle outside her window!
Hummingbird Icicle On The Branch
As hard as it is to imagine, the unique icicle you see in the photo above was just waiting for one Michigan woman, Tammy Shriver, when she stepped outside one morning. So you can only imagine how awestruck Shriver felt when she saw the hummingbird-shaped ice!
“Oh my gosh,” Shriver said at the time, “That looks like a bird!” Of course, next, she did what we all would: “I grabbed my iPad and just started grabbing pictures on it…and then ran outside to get a better angle.”
How did the fantastic natural sculpture occur? Well, water melted down from the roof of the farmer’s home, spilling onto the tree sitting in front of the house. Next, what’s known as a “freeze-thaw-freeze sequence” took place, because of the changing temperatures of winters. As the water froze, thawed, and then refroze, the unique icicle emerged.
There was only one problem with Shriver’s discovery…
Present From Her Grandma
Well, in all honesty, there was more than one problem with the hummingbird icicle. First, like so many kids all over the world, Shriver’s six-year-old granddaughter, Kaylinn, absolutely loves to play with and eat icicles! Thankfully, the little one listened to her grandmother when she asked her to leave this particular natural ice sculpture alone for everyone to see and enjoy.
Sadly, there was a bigger problem facing the hummingbird icicle: sunlight. As Shriver always knew must happen, the heat and sunshine eventually melted the beautiful ice shape away. However, since it stayed that way for almost an entire week, Shriver considers herself relatively lucky! “My grandma liked hummingbirds,” Shriver said afterward, “maybe grandma sent me a hummingbird.”
Hopefully, in the future, Shriver’s grandmother will send her more incredible icicles to share with the world!
