It’s 2020! You know what that means: its time to take a look back at the worst movies of the past decade. Which flicks from the 2010s will not stand up to the test of time? Let’s find out!
The Emoji Movie (2017)
Let’s be honest, a movie about emojis coming to life was never going to work. However, that did not stop Sony Pictures from cranking out this strange film, which only earned a 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. The biggest complaint? Most viewers quickly realized that The Emjoi Movie was little more than a rip off of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph. Pair that with the bad jokes, cringeworthy plot, and blatant product placement, and its no surprise Emoji Movie flopped hard. Plus, who asks legendary actor Sir Patrick Stewart to voice the poop emoji? For shame.
Cats (2019)
One of the worst movies came in right at the last minute. In fact, before Cats debuted, some sites had already posted their Worst Movies of the Decade list. Some even went back and changed them! Based on the hit musical from the ’80s by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cats combined music, an odd collection of celebrities, and the scariest CGI ever seen to make a movie that no one wanted. With just a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, Cats might be the worst movie of the entire decade, if not of all time. It’s also one of the worst-performing: in total, it lost nearly $80 million at the box office!
The Last Airbender (2010)
Avatar: The Last Airbender completely worked as a television show. The animated hit contained complex characters, an exciting plot, and depth never before seen in a children’s show. The movie, on the other hand, failed completely. Despite the iconic M. Night Shyamalan taking the helm, critics complained that The Last Airbender was strange, incomprehensible, and, worst of all, boring.
Believe it or not, Airbender almost ruined Shyamalan’s career. After the film came out, it took five years for Hollywood to trust the director again. Even then, his first film back, The Visit, was a low-budget affair. It was not until 2016, with Split, that a major studio trusted Shyamalan with a big-budget movie.
Saving Christmas (2014)
While Cats was bad, Saving Christmas might need to take the cake for “Worst Movie of the 2010s.” After all, while Cats earned a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, Saving Christmas received the dreaded 0%. Of course, almost all holiday movies are cheesy. But few fail as hard as Saving Christmas, which multiple critics called “a disaster.” A thinly veiled attempt at converting viewers to Christianity, the film, which stars child star Kirk Cameron, failed to sit well with critics or viewers. So, it’ll likely come as no surprise that, since then, Cameron has elected to focus on work other than acting.
Of course, these are just a few of the worst films that came out in the 2010s! We can’t wait to look back in 2030 and see how the worst movies on the 2020s compare…
