2021 has certainly not been easy for fans of classic Hollywood. Another of Tinseltown’s biggest stars, actor Christopher Plummer, has passed away. The star of The Sound of Music was 91.
Outstanding Achievements
Last week, Hollywood star Christopher Plummer died peacefully at his home in Connecticut, with his wife of 53 years, Elaine Taylor, by his side. The 91-year-old actor’s manager, Lou Pitt, released a heartfelt statement the next day. “Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self-deprecating humor and the music of words,” Pitt wrote. “He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”
In the world of entertainment, Plummer’s achievements are too many to list. With more than 200 appearances in film and television, the actor enjoyed one of the most prolific careers in all of Hollywood…
More Than 200 Appearances
Believe it or not, Christopher Plummer started his career all the way back in 1953, on the television show Broadway Television Theatre. However, even today, many might still remember him best for his role of Captain George Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 1965. Alongside Julie Andrews, the film shot Plummer to international stardom and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Of course, from there, Plummer went to star in some of the greatest films of all time, including The Man Who Would Be King, Star Trek VI, Twelve Monkeys, A Beautiful Mind, and even children’s films like Up, among many others. Most recently, Plummer starred in the smash hit Knives Out (seen above), which made him popular with a whole new generation. He’s also one of the oldest actors to earn an Oscar, winning a Best Actor Oscar at the age of 82!
After the actor passed away, many of his former co-stars publicly mourned the loss.
Mourning Christopher Plummer
After Plummer died, Julie Andrews was one of the first to offer her condolences to his family. “The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend. I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humor and fun we shared through the years,” Andrews said in a statement. “My heart and condolences go out to his lovely wife Elaine, and his daughter Amanda.”
Iconic actress Helen Mirren, who starred with Plummer in The Last Station, also made a statement the following day. “He was a mighty force both as Man and Actor. He was an actor in the 19th century meaning of the word—his commitment to his profession. His art was total, theater being a constant and the most important part of the totality of his drive to engage with storytelling,” Mirren stated. “He was fearless, energetic, courageous, knowledgeable, professional and a monument to what an actor can be. A Great Actor in the truest sense.”
Rest in peace, Christopher Plummer.
