Unless you’ve been in a cabin in the woods for the past few months, you’ve probably heard a little something about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s incredibly revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey. Now, the reactions from the most prominent stars have come in…
Supportive Celebrity Reactions
As you might imagine, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said quite a bit of alarming things to Oprah Winfrey. They both claimed racism to have been bullied by the Royal Family to behave a certain way, while Markle also claimed that Palace employees had made racist comments towards her. The former Duchess even mentioned that she had even considered committed suicide, leading to her and Harry’s eventual exit from the Royal Family.
After the interview aired, many celebrities and friends of Markle stepped forward to support her. One of the first was tennis player Serena Williams, one of Markle’s best friends. “Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life—and leads by example—with empathy and compassion. She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced,” Williams wrote in a statement. She concluded by asking for peace and love for everyone in the future.
Meanwhile, others took a more direct stance against the Royal Family, like actress and radio host Jameela Jamil. “Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law.” Jamil commented on Twitter. “If this is what the royal family is comfortable doing to a heavily pregnant woman publicly…. can we even imagine what they put her through privately?”
While many stars came out in support of Harry and Markle, some were not as kind…
Less Thrilled With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Interview
After Markle and Harry‘s interview, TV host Pierce Morgan erupted on Good Morning Britain, calling Markle a liar. “I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe a weather report if she read it,” said Morgan. When his co-hosts pushed back, the host stormed off the set. The rant earned the most number of television complaints in British history and led to Morgan leaving the show. On the other hand, TV host Phillip Schofield was even blunter. “You’ve stabbed a knife to the heart of the monarchy – which obviously there were some things that they felt needed to be highlighted, fair enough,” he said on the show This Morning. “You’ve made your point essentially, shut up now and get on with your quiet American life.”
Finally, the Royal Family has responded by investigating claims that Markle bullied Palace employees while living there. However, some have pointed out that it seems absurd to focus on the former royals, while the accusations of Prince Andrew have nearly been forgotten. In fact, world-famous lawyer Gloria Allred told the Guardian that she believes the Palace is using the interview to their advantage. “Why does Buckingham Palace not conduct an investigation and make a public statement condemning Prince Andrew for failing to provide what is requested to those who are seeking the whole truth and justice for the victims of crimes against children?” Allred said. “The investigation into Meghan Markle is a distraction, and it appears hypocritical under the circumstances. I have to wonder if it reflects a calculated decision to take the focus off of Prince Andrew.”
