Thanks to an incredible career as a model, actress, and even singer, Marylin Monroe became one of the wealthiest stars of her era. However, she didn’t pick up many celebrity homes, like some of her friends and co-stars. Let’s take a look at just how many homes the ’50s entertainment goddess had before her passing…
Humble Beginnings For Marylin Monroe
Unlike many of the celebrities of the 1950s, Marylin Monroe did not come from a wealthy family. For most of her childhood life, Monroe lived in a small, simple 1,300-square-foot three-bedroom home. Sadly, by her teens, the would-be actresses ended up in Los Angeles Orphans Home Society, staying in the system until the age of 16-years-old.
At 16, in 1942, Monroe decided to tie the not to her high school sweetheart, James Dougherty. The two moved into a one-bedroom apartment in Sherman Oaks. They also lived on Catalina Island when Doughtery enlisted. However, the couple soon separated. With Doughtery diving into the military and Monroe earning more modeling contracts than ever, bigger things lay ahead…
Changing Men And Houses
In the ’40s, when Monroe started working in Hollywood, she lived in a small apartment near Warner Brothers Studio. However, after starring in movies like Dangerous Years and Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! she decided to upgrade her housing and partner. Monroe soon moved into a lavish, 5,900-square-foot home with actor John Carroll, who left his wife for the actress, in West Hollywood. In fact, it was Carroll who gave Monroe to dye her hair blonde!
Sadly, rumors about Monroe and Carroll started spreading fast, so they decided to end their relationship. For a time, the actress lived in a shared home with actress Natasha Lytess, but her next major upgrade came in 1954. After marrying New York Yankees baseball star Joe DiMaggio, Monroe and her husband moved into a massive Hollywood mansion. The iconic Spanish revival home in Los Angeles had four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms, as well as a garage, swimming pool, and personal spa. Just a year later, though, they split and sold the house.
Unlike other celebrities, Monroe did not like to keep the houses she lived in. This would continue, even with her last home ever…
Marylin Monroe’s Last Home
Following her from DiMaggio, Monroe reignited a romance with playwright Arthur Miller, with the two marrying in 1956. For the first time, Monroe actually owned two homes! While she and Miller spent most of their time in a large apartment with a private elevator located at 444 East 57th Street in New York, they also had a vacation home in the Hamptons. The 1,300-square-foot windmill house, which sat on five acres of land, provided the couple a place to hide away from the world and Monroe’s crazy fans.
While a few more homes came and went, as well as a separation from Miller, Monroe finally found her forever home in 1961. Located in Brentwood, the modes home had a pool and large gates to protect Monroe from unwanted attention. Sadly, Monroe passed away at the age of 36 in 1962. Today, incredibly, none other than Marilyn Monroe look-alike and ’50s model Jasmine Chiswell owns the home. She regularly posts video tours of the home on her YouTube page and claims the house remains haunted by Monroe’s ghost. Spooky!
